UPCYCLE at the E-OilÉ Workshop: When Packaging Safety Becomes a Citizen Issue

The packaging we use every day is not a neutral choice. On 26 May 2026, sister project E-OilÉ brought that message to the centre of its M12 Workshop, gathering scientists, industry experts and civil society organisations for a 90-minute online session on how everyday packaging decisions affect human health and the planet.

Background
(why this matters)

I

With over 460 million tonnes of plastics produced annually, only about 9 percent is recycled globally; plastic packaging accounts for 40 percent of demand and 60 percent of plastic waste in Europe.

II

Two-thirds of packaging is used only once; up to 50 percent is disposed within a year. Many packages use recalcitrant plastics that can persist for centuries, with a 95 percent loss of material value after first use.

III

Only 37.8 percent of collected post-consumer packaging waste was recycled in Europe in 2022; multilayers and contaminated streams are primary obstacles to recycling.

IV

UPCYCLE addresses these challenges establishing circular value chains that maximise the use of waste and residue streams and develop eco-designed polymer materials that allow recyclability and controlled biodegradability while meeting end-use performance.
