AIMPLAS Showcases Sustainable Innovation at K Fair 2025

Upcycle Project - K Fair 2025

From October 8 to 15, 2025, the international plastics and rubber industry gathered in Düsseldorf for the renowned K Fair 2025, the world’s leading event for innovation and sustainability in the sector. Among the key participants was AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Institute, proudly representing the Horizon Europe UPCYCLE Project, which focuses on advancing circular solutions for plastic waste through biotechnological and sustainable design approaches.

During the event, AIMPLAS highlighted the UPCYCLE project’s ambition to reshape the future of plastics through circular design, biotechnological innovation, and Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles.

With over 460 million tonnes of plastics produced annually and less than 10% recycled worldwide, the need for scalable circular solutions has never been more urgent. In Europe, plastic packaging alone represents 40% of demand and 60% of waste, with multilayer and contaminated streams remaining key barriers to recyclability. AIMPLAS used this global platform to emphasise how UPCYCLE tackles these challenges by turning non-recyclable plastic waste into highly recyclable and non-persistent materials, ensuring that tomorrow’s packaging is both high-performance and environmentally responsible.

Building on the success of the H2020 UPLIFT project, UPCYCLE develops eco-designed polymer systems that combine recyclability, controlled biodegradability, and end-use performance. The project’s approach integrates chemo-enzymatic depolymerisation, microbial fermentation, and smart polymerisation to produce next-generation eco-polymers from mixed plastic waste and biomass residues. These technologies are being scaled up to TRL7, supported by Digital Twins and life-cycle assessments to ensure safety, sustainability, and industrial readiness.

AIMPLAS’s presence at K Fair 2025 provided a valuable opportunity to engage with international experts, policymakers, and industry leaders driving the plastics transition. Discussions centred on the biorefinery concept, bioplastics formulations, and digital process optimisation, showcasing how UPCYCLE can support Europe’s move towards a circular, bio-based, and competitive plastics economy.
